A ratio shows the relationship between two or more quantities.

For instance, 1:51:5 is for every 11 part of the first quantity, there is every 55 parts of the second quantity.

Algebraic Equation

A ratio can be seen as an algebraic equation, for instance 1:51:5 can be seen as 1x:5x1x:5x, which we can then solve for xx.

Example Solving

We will be solving for 1:5=301:5 = 30, with 3030 being the total number.

1x:5x=301x:5x = 30

We unify them to equate to the total number.

6x=306x = 30

We then divide the total number by the count of xx.

306=5=x\frac{30}{6} = 5 = x

Giving us x=5x = 5, and therefore solving the ratio.

5:25=305:25 = 30
