Conservative

Eligibility/Application: Must be on the national Approved List - done by passing the Parliamentary Assessment Board (PAB, part of the Conservative Board). Longlisting: Local application committee filters applications to form a longlist, coinciding a national selection committee member who must (a) be present and (b) approve their selection. Shortlisting: Executive council the local Conservative association forms the shortlist. Final selection: Local members vote on shortlisted candidates at a ‘special general meeting’.

The CCHQ (Conservative Campaign Head-Quarters) is effectively the election-time version of the Conservative Board.

CA = Conservative Association

Additional

  • Sitting MPs: Not automatically re-adopted, must apply to the local executive council for re-adoption. If rejected by the council, the MP can demand a full ballot of all local members to secure their candidacy.
  • National Control: Longlisting stage, key area of central control. The presence and required approval of a national selection committee member ensure the central party can steer the list of potential candidates, even in local contests.
  • Alternative Process: The party can use more centralised, streamlined procedures for by-elections or snap general elections when time is limited.

Labour

Eligibility/Application: Must have been a member of the Labour party for more-than 12 months and in an affiliated trade union. Longlisting: Conducted centrally by an National Executive Committee (NEC) panel.

The NEC requires a mandate for 50% women and inclusion of ethnic minority candidates. Candidates nominated by affiliated unions are automatically longlisted.

Shortlisting: Local selection committees interview, produce a shortlist that must also meet the diversity requirements. Final Selection: Hustlings, local members vote on shortlisted candidates using a preferential voting system (Alternative Vote).

CLP = Constituency Labour Party

Additional

  • Sitting MPs: Trigger Ballot, automatically included on the shortlist if a selection is triggered. A full selection is triggered if one-third or more of either the local Labour Party branches or affiliated trade union/socialist society branches vote for a contest.
  • Central Power: NEC, has absolute power and can cancel or amend selection procedures across the UK (England, Scotland, and Wales). Can enforce requirements like the 50% women/ethnic minority mandate.
  • Streamlined Process: More centralised selection process for ‘non-priority’ seats (those where the party is unlikely to win), bypassing some stages to select candidates more quickly. The Central Party can override the CLP and shortlist/impose, i.e., if they do not believe they are not organised.
  • Positive Action: Often uses All-Women Shortlists (AWS) in targeted seats as a tool to meet its diversity goals, a practice that directly overrides the standard open selection process

Liberal Democrats

Eligibility/Application: Must be an approved Liberal Democrat member and pass approval by the Regional Candidates Committee (RCC).
Longlisting: Regional party manages applications and produces a longlist of approved candidates. Shortlisting: Local party executive interviews candidates and agrees a shortlist, usually with regional oversight.
Final Selection: Local party members vote at a selection meeting (often a hustings), usually by one-member-one-vote.

LDCA = Local Liberal Democrat Party, aka., L.A = Local Association

Additional

  • Sitting MPs: Normally re-selected automatically unless a local or regional challenge is triggered.
  • Decentralisation: Most candidate selection power lies with local parties, reflecting the Lib Dem emphasis on localism.
  • Regional Control: Regions can intervene in selections, especially in target seats, to ensure candidate quality and diversity.
  • Fast-Track Process: In by-elections or snap elections, the Federal or Regional Party can shorten or bypass stages to select a candidate quickly.
  • Diversity Measures: Encourages gender-balanced shortlists and representative candidates, but generally avoids mandatory quotas like AWS.
