There are different forms of democracy.

Direct

A democracy in which people directly make decisions.

This is still used in modern democracy, but less often, via. referendums.

For

  • Pure democracy
  • Increased participation
  • Increased legitimacy
  • Improved political education

Against

  • Undermines representative democracy
  • Tyranny of the majority

Representative

A democracy in which people choose representatives to make decisions on their behalf.

For

  • More informed policy
  • Practical
  • Everyone over the age of 18 can vote
  • People don’t want to make decisions constantly

Against

  • Not everyone over the age of 18 is registered, or turns out
  • Variety of parties
  • Electoral system means there is a lack of choice
