Civic Nationalism
Example: USA
Society is ‘built’ by a shared pride in the political institutions of the state (not so much a claim to any national identity).
Citizens are encouraged, from an early age, to develop a pride in institutions of the country. Civic nationalism is associated with patriotism.
Example: UK, France, Germany
This has also become more prevalent in European states which have experienced comparatively more immigration recently, when compared to its past.
In order to gain citizenship in the UK, you must past a test which ensures you gain an understanding of the language, history of the UK, and national characteristics.
Liberal Internationalism
The belief that liberal, democratic societies should be promoted wherever possible. This may include intervening in states which do not confirm to this model.
It is a belief that liberalism is an absolute human value - these values deserve to be promoted.
Example: The European Union (EU)
The best way to protect these values is through international cooperation.
In order to qualify for membership, states have to prove their political systems are democratic and that human rights are protected.
This therefore extends to the concept of society to an international level.
